Mass Ave's Historic Landscape
1913 view along a sidewalk of Mass Ave, west of Dupont Circle. The double rows of American lindens were planted in the 1870s. The double rows once stretched on both sides of Mass Ave for > 5 miles across Washington. City planners also created “parks” of open lawns in the public land between the sidewalks and the buildings. Straight, shady allées and long park views were the signature landscape of Washington’s grand avenues.
