Outdoor workshop on pruning led by UFA

With the DC Urban Forestry Administration (UFA), we arranged an innovative outdoor workshop on how UFA prunes sidewalk  trees for best growth and health.

UFA's Earl Eutsler and Simoun Banua taught volunteers  how to find crossing and rubbing branches and branches that will deform the tree’s shape. Volunteers got to practice with the tools. The main message:  city sidewalk trees need all the leaves they can get.

NO ONE is to prune city sidewalk trees EXCEPT the UFA. *  Moreover UFA rarely (if ever) grants pruning licenses allowing others to prune city trees.

Thank you UFA for sharing your knowledge with us!

We also want to thank Keith Pitchford of PitchfordTrees.com who advised during the class and Jim Urban who reviewed the tree list.

* It is against the law to cut branches off of city trees. All trees between sidewalks and streets belong to the city and are controlled by UFA. The UFA wants neighbors and volunteers to weed and mulch them. But no one should cut branches, per DC Urban Forest Preservation Act and DC rules for Public Space Management.
